Instructor Certification Program

Become a Trained Pole Instructor

Starting Fall 2024!

What our Certification Program Consists Of:

Pole Pedagogy

Unlike other certification programs for pole which focus on teaching moves for specific levels, we aim to take a more overarching approach. We aim to train on how to teach pole dancing, a pedagogy of pole. With a focus on learning anatomy for pole and how to structure a class based on the style you are teaching, we are educating on how to be better teachers overall, with room for your own growth within pole. Rather than a focus on teaching a laundry list of individual moves, we aim to give you the tools and resources for analyzing moves to recognize what biomechanics are required to allow for your own growth and application of moves.

Anatomy and Biomechanics for Pole

Under the guidance of our resident Physical Therapist, Stacy Scherzer DPT, this course will review the important muscles included within pole. In this program we will go over the most important body groups with their muscles and joints (shoulders, hips, torso, legs, etc.) with a focus on how these appear in the fundamental movements of pole (push, pull, hinge, inverted, etc.). Discussions on how to cue students, guide them into movements, as well as how to test if students are ready for certain movements serve as the focus of these sections.

Spotting

In this program, we will review the basics of spotting and how spotting can appear in all levels of pole. The discussion will feature how to assess what is “weight bearing” and needs support as well as the different stances and types of spotting. We will also practice spotting on each other, preparing you for the reality of dropping unexpectedly as well as avoiding getting kicked in the face.

7 Week Set-Up

  • 6 weeks of seminar based teaching
  • Final week of mock classes
  • Shadowing of 21 classes total (at about 3 per week)
    • 12 will be shadowing each of the level courses (Pole Foundations, Aerial Essentials, Intermediate, Advanced)
    • 9 can be from any class we offer (including additional level courses)
    • 10 of the 21 must also be participated in
  • An included workbook that will have a breakdown of all lessons for you to keep forever as well as “homework” (prompts for engaging in shadow classes).

Dates and Topics

All Seminars are Sundays from 2:30-4:30pm.

Week One (9/15): Introduction / What is it to be a Pole Instructor?

  • Breakdown of the goals and set-up of the course.
  • Analyzation of what makes someone a “good” pole instructor.

Weeks Two (9/22) and Three (9/29): Anatomy and Biomechanics for Pole

  • Breakdown of the push and pull mechanics that are fundamental to the upper body’s engagement in pole.
  • Overview of the hips and shoulders with internal and external rotation with examples through different movements.
  • Discussion on differing cues that instructors can use, what does it mean to “engage” a muscle, and how do you get students to use muscles that they do not know the location of.

Weeks Four (10/6) and Five (10/13): Class Structuring

  • The role of a warm-up, the importance of having progressions for movement, the goal of a class.
  • How to accommodate different body types with different limitations and abilities to encourage inclusion.
  • Mini classes with fellow students to practice breaking down movements where feedback and questions can be asked freely.

Week Six (10/20): Spotting Basics and Workshop

  • A breakdown of spotting technique overall, demonstrated through select movements.
  • Practice of spotting on instructors and each other in various moves and at varying levels of spotting (light, medium, heavy).

Week Seven (10/27): Final Mock Class / Closing Ceremony

  • Mock classes where participants will run their own class for other participants, Pole Factory MKE instructors, and Pole Factory MKE students to get real time feedback.

[Descriptions are not exhaustive of what will be focused on.]

What is included?

  • 14 hours of small group seminar instruction.
  • A workbook that holds all seminar materials as well as prompts to guide participants through the shadowing for pointed reflection.
  • 21 classes of shadowing where participants can hands on engage with instructors to see how moves are broken down, when to adjust for different bodies, how progressions differ for different classes, different ways to correct students or when to let them figure it out, as well as ask instructors how they make these kinds of decisions.
    • 10 of which will be participated in, allowing for students to physically feel the effects of the teaching set up.
    • 11 of which will be silently shadowed, allowing participants to access different types of classes they might not usually take to see the ways that different levels and class types require different class structuring.
  • One-on-one reflection with the program director on progress throughout the program, allowing for individual tailoring in shadowing and practice.
  • Access to Pole Factory MKE’s level breakdown with an encyclopedia of movements, prerequisites, and why the levels and movements are structured the way they are.
  • A final certificate to certify completion of the program!

For (Elite & Bold) Members

$550

  • Membership DiscountsĀ do apply (15% and 10%, respectively).

Why this certification?

We developed this certification course specifically with growing teachers in mind. The majority of pole certification courses currently on the market focus on levels and the moves they categorize within each level. Most are short with only a weekend long focus.

Our goal in creating this program is to foster working on being a teacher and gaining general knowledge about pole anatomy so that instructors can better connect to different moves that we may not have included as well as take the time to reflect on what kind of teacher they want to be. There are no level distinctions in our certificate as our focus is on recognizing that this kind of knowledge is applicable to every level of pole.

Who is this certification for?

You do not have to be interested in actually teaching immediately to take this program. We encourage that you have been poling for at least a year. This is not a program for someone who is interested in knowing specific moves for specific levels. However, if you are interested in anatomy for pole, learning more about class structures such as the role of a warm-up and differing progressions, and learning about different bodies in pole and how to accommodate for differences, then this will be the certification for you.

How many people are going to be in the program?

We want to encourage close bonds and genuine interactions, so there is limited space and we will be capping the program. Please make sure you fill out the entire application to be considered.

Are payment plans available?

Total payment for the certification is due before the seminars begin on September 15th. You can coordinate how you’d like the payment plan structured with the program director.

What if I have to miss Sunday seminars?

We recognize that you may have scheduling conflicts with the Sundays we have listed. Please contact us with the dates you are concerned about as we are willing to work with you. However, there are some classes that we are unable to accommodate and missing more than two seminars can result in not receiving your certificate. With that, we recognize that emergencies happen, so please reach out to the program director for coordinating.

How does shadowing work?

You will be coordinating with the program director about what classes you plan on shadowing each week and what you have shadowed to make sure that all requirements are completed. However, the choice of when and what classes are up to you. If you have certain concerns about the days of classes that are required, please note that to the program director and they will work with you to make sure that all requirements are properly completed.

What if I cannot shadow three classes a week?

We believe that the shadowing time is the most important for seeing how instructors are not all cut from the same cloth and that different approaches work for different students. While we do required that 18 shadow classes be completed before your Final Mock Class and that the certification sheet will not be given until all 21 are completed, these classes can be completed at your own time. So if you need to run over into November to complete, we are more than happy to work with you on this.

Will I be teaching at Pole Factory upon completion?

Our certification program isĀ not a hiring program. Certificate holders will be first considered when we bring on more staff (for weekly classes, party hosts, or substitutes), but it is not a guarantee that certificate holders will be hired. We strive to have knowledgeable and passionate instructors who encourage and support our students first and foremost.
